About this product
When the gap is too big to spike, you close it.
Heavy duty knitted netting on a 2 cm mesh, cut to any size and shape without fraying. The right answer for fruit, for openings and for small birds.
Heavy duty knitted netting on a 2 cm mesh, UV stabilised, 30 g/m2, in two sizes.
It closes an area rather than a line, which is the job spikes cannot do: fruit trees, vegetable beds, a chicken run, an open eave, the gap under a deck.
It is also the honest answer for small birds. A sparrow settles between spike pins; it does not get through a 2 cm mesh.
Cut it to size and shape with scissors. Knitted netting holds its edge rather than unravelling the way a woven net does.
Take it off at the end of the season, dry it and it goes back on next year.
Tension is the whole skill with netting. A net pulled taut over a frame keeps birds off the fruit. The same net draped loosely onto the tree lets them stand on it and eat through it, and a slack net is also where a bird gets tangled. If you take one thing from this page, take that.
Sizing works differently from what people expect. The stated dimensions are the net at rest, and stretching one side hard shortens the other, so measure the area you need to cover and buy the size that covers it comfortably rather than exactly. It is far easier to cut a net down than to make one bigger.
On what to net and what to spike: net a volume, spike a surface. A fruit tree, a vegetable bed, an open barn end, a balcony void, the space under a solar array; those are netting jobs. A ledge, a gutter lip, a sign top or a fence rail is a spike job. Where a building has both, most people buy both.
One responsibility that comes with netting: check it. A net that has come loose is a hazard to birds and to hedgehogs, and a torn corner is how something gets in and then cannot get out. Walk it after a storm.
Still deciding?
Not sure yet? That is fine.
You cannot always judge a product from a photograph. If it is not right for you, send it back within 14 days of delivery in resaleable condition and we refund the price you paid, including standard delivery. That is on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights if anything arrives faulty.

2 cm by 2 cm openings, which is small enough to keep out the small birds a spike strip cannot.
Which size should I buy?
Measure the area and buy the one that covers it comfortably. Cutting a net down is easy; making one bigger is not.
Will it fray when I cut it?
Not easily. It is knitted rather than woven, so a cut edge holds.
How do I fix it down?
Tie, peg, clip or weight the edges, and tension it. A draped net is worse than no net.
Why does tension matter so much?
A taut net keeps birds off the fruit. A slack one lets them stand on it and reach through, and it is also how a bird gets tangled.
Can I put it straight on the tree?
You can, but over a frame is much better. Fruit touching the net is fruit a bird can eat.
Will birds get caught in it?
A properly tensioned net is a barrier they bounce off. A loose or torn one is a hazard, which is why we ask you to check it after weather.
What about hedgehogs?
Netting left slack at ground level is a genuine hedgehog risk. Keep the bottom edge tight or lifted.
Is it reusable?
Yes. Take it off at the end of the season, dry it and store it. Damp storage is what ruins netting.
How long will it last?
It is UV stabilised and made to be reused. We do not publish a figure in years, because storage and handling decide it more than the material does.
What weight is it?
30 g/m2 knitted nylon.
Can I use it over a vegetable bed?
Yes, and on hoops it is one of the easiest wins in a garden.
Can I use it for chickens?
As a cover over a run, yes. It is not a fence and it will not stop a dog.
Will it stop possums?
No. A possum goes through a light net. Netting for possums is a heavier grade product than this.
Will it stop rats?
No. Rats need trapping.
Can I use it under a solar array?
For a proper solar panel job, our solar panel mesh kit is the right product, because it comes with the clips and a rigid mesh.
Can I use it on a building?
For an open eave, a barn end or a balcony void, yes. It needs a frame or fixing points to be tensioned against.
Does it let light and rain through?
Yes. A 2 cm mesh is mostly open space.
Will it shade my crop?
Barely. It is a bird barrier, not a shade cloth.
Can I join two nets?
Yes, with cable ties or a needle and twine. Overlap them properly, because a gap at a join is a door.
Is it visible?
It is a highly visible net, which is deliberate: birds see it and avoid it, and so do you when you are mowing.
Can I leave it up all year?
You can, and it will last longer if you do not. Off season storage is easier on the net than another six months of sun.
Is it safe around pets?
Keep it tensioned and off the ground. A slack net at ground level is something a dog or cat can get into.
Can I cut a hole in it for a branch?
Yes, and tie the edge of the hole so it does not open up.
What tools do I need?
Scissors, cable ties or twine, and pegs or weights for the bottom edge.
Should I use spikes as well?
If there are ledges, gutters or rails in the same area, yes. Net the volume, spike the surfaces.
Do you sell a heavier net?
Not at present. This is the domestic and light commercial grade.
How much is delivery?
We dispatch within 2 working days. Delivery then takes up to 7 working days by tracked courier. Delivery is free across Australia on orders of $99 or more, and $27.50 including GST below that. Remote and regional addresses may take longer.
What if I change my mind?
Change your mind? Return it unused in its original packaging within 14 days of delivery; you pay the return postage. If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, the Australian Consumer Law covers you and we pay the return postage. Our refunds and returns page has the full detail.

The complete guide
Netting properly, which mostly means tensioning properly
5 min readBuyFactory Direct
Tension is the whole skill
A net pulled taut over a frame keeps birds off. The same net draped onto the tree lets them stand on it and eat straight through the mesh, and a slack net is also where a bird gets tangled.
If you take one thing from this page, take that. Frames matter more than net grade.
Sizing
The stated dimensions are the net at rest. Stretch one side hard and the other shortens, so measure the area and buy the size that covers it comfortably rather than exactly. Cutting a net down is easy. Making one bigger is not.
Fixing the edges
Tie, peg, clip or weight the bottom edge, and close it properly. A gap at ground level or at a join is a door, and birds are very good at finding doors.
Overlap two nets generously if you are joining them, and tie the overlap rather than trusting gravity.
What to net and what to spike
Net a volume, spike a surface. Fruit trees, vegetable beds, a chicken run, an open barn end, a balcony void, the space under a deck: netting jobs. A ledge, a gutter lip, a sign top, a fence rail: spike jobs.
Netting is also the honest answer for small birds. A sparrow settles between spike pins. It does not pass a two centimetre mesh.
The responsibility that comes with it
Check it. A net that has come loose is a hazard to birds and to hedgehogs, and a torn corner is how something gets in and cannot get out. Walk it after a storm and after anything heavy has been near it.
Storage
Dry it before you put it away. Netting stored damp comes out of the shed as a problem rather than as a net, and the UV stabiliser does nothing whatever about mildew.
What it will not do
It will not stop possums, which go through a light net. It will not stop rats. And it will not survive being walked on, so plan access before you cover something you will need to get into.
Bird Netting Mesh sold by BuyFactory Direct at buyfactorydirect.com.au. Heavy duty knitted UV
stabilised nylon netting, 30 g/m2, 2 cm x 2 cm mesh, in two sizes: 5 m x 10 m at AUD 121 and
5 m x 20 m at AUD 176. Cuts to size and shape without fraying easily, and is reusable season to
season if dried before storage. It closes a VOLUME rather than a line, which is the job a spike
strip cannot do: fruit trees, vegetable beds, chicken runs, open eaves, the gap under a deck or
a solar array. It is also the correct answer for SMALL BIRDS, which settle between spike pins but
do not pass a 2 cm mesh. TENSION is the critical technique: a taut net over a frame keeps birds
off, a slack draped net lets them stand on it, eat through it and become tangled. Stated
dimensions are the net at rest and stretching one side shortens the other, so buy the size that
covers the area comfortably rather than exactly. A loose or torn net is a hazard to birds and
hedgehogs and should be checked after a storm. No effectiveness percentage, service life or
warranty is claimed. We dispatch within 2 working days. Delivery then takes up to 7 working days by tracked courier. Delivery is free across Australia on orders of $99 or more, and $27.50 including GST below that.
