Looking after it

Wipe the mirrored faces when they dull. A disc covered in dust reflects almost nothing and stops doing the one thing it is for.

Nothing To Fix ToHangs where a spike cannot go
Double SidedBoth faces mirrored, not one
Nothing ToxicLight and movement, no chemicals
Honest About ItBirds habituate. Move them about

Movement and flash, where there is nothing to fix a spike to.

Double sided mirrored discs that spin in the wind. For open spaces, fruit trees and boat covers, and honest about the fact that birds do get used to them.

A mirrored disc on a hook that turns in the wind, throwing moving light where a bird was thinking of landing.

Both faces are mirrored, which matters: a single sided disc spends half its rotation doing nothing.

The place for these is anywhere there is no surface to fix a spike to. Fruit trees, vegetable beds, a boat cover, an open carport, a balcony rail.

They need two things to work: wind and daylight. In a sheltered corner or under cover they are decorative.

Sold per disc with no minimum, so you can start with a few and add more where the birds move to.

Bird Deterrent Discs | Repellent Reflective Discs | Bird Scare Discs

This is a scare product, and scare products work differently to barriers. A spike removes the standing surface, so there is nothing to get used to. A disc relies on a bird deciding the flashing thing is a risk, and birds are good at learning that a risk which never does anything is not a risk.

That is not a reason to avoid them; it is a reason to use them properly. Move them every couple of weeks, add a couple more when the pressure rises, and take them down out of season so the birds do not spend the winter learning to ignore them. Used that way they keep earning their place in an orchard or over a vegetable bed.

They also do something no spike does: they cover space rather than a line. A run of discs through a fruit tree is protecting a volume, which is why they pair well with netting on a serious crop and with a spike strip on the ledges nearby.

One practical note about siting. Hang them where they can spin freely and where the light will actually catch them, which usually means the outside of a tree rather than the middle of it, and high enough that they are not tangling in the crop.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You cannot always judge a product from a photograph. If it is not right for you, send it back within 14 days of delivery in resaleable condition and we refund the price you paid, including standard delivery. That is on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights if anything arrives faulty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do they work?

They spin in the wind and throw moving reflected light, which birds read as movement where they were about to land.

Do they actually work?

In the right place, for a while. They need wind and daylight, and birds do get used to them, which is why moving them matters.

Will birds get used to them?

Yes, and we would rather say so. Move them every couple of weeks and take them down out of season.

Where should I hang them?

Where they can spin freely and catch the light: the outside of a tree rather than the middle, above the crop rather than in it.

How many do I need?

For a single fruit tree, two or three. For a row, one every few metres. Start small and add where the birds move to.

Do they work at night?

No. They need light to reflect.

Do they work without wind?

Barely. Movement is half of what they do.

Are they noisy?

Not by design. If two hang close enough to touch they will click, which some people find useful and some do not.

Will they annoy the neighbours?

Flashing light travels further than people expect. Think about where the reflection lands before you hang a row of them on a boundary.

Are they double sided?

Yes, both faces are mirrored. Single sided discs spend half of every rotation doing nothing, which is why we do not sell those.

How big are they?

53 cm hanging length including the hook.

Do they come assembled?

There is light assembly with instructions included, which also lets you set them up the way you want them.

Are the edges sharp?

No, they are smoothed.

Can I use them on a boat?

Yes, and boat covers and jetties are a common use. Tie them so they cannot slap the cover in a blow.

Will they work on gulls?

Sometimes, and less well than on smaller birds. Gulls are bold and habituate fast.

Will they work on pigeons?

On an open area, sometimes. On a ledge, use spikes: a barrier beats a scare product every time.

Can I use them with netting?

Yes, and that is a good combination on a crop. The net is the barrier, the discs discourage landing on top of it.

How long do they last outdoors?

They are made for outdoor use. What ends them is usually the hanging point or a storm rather than the disc.

Do they need cleaning?

Yes. Dusty mirrors reflect very little. Wipe them when they dull.

Can I hang them indoors?

In a barn or a shed with light coming in, sometimes. In a dark space they do nothing.

Do they harm birds?

No. There is nothing to touch and nothing toxic.

Are they safe near stock?

There is nothing harmful about them, but hang them where an animal cannot pull one down and chew it.

Will they keep possums out of a tree?

No. Possums are not deterred by reflected light. Netting or a trunk band is the approach there.

What about rats in a fruit tree?

No, for the same reason. That is a trapping job.

Can I use them on a balcony?

Yes, if there is wind. Check with your body corporate before hanging anything on a shared frontage.

Do you sell them in packs?

They are sold per disc, so you buy exactly the number you want.

Do you sell the tape as well?

Yes. The reflective tape does a similar job over a longer run and is usually cheaper per metre covered.

Do you install anything?

No, we supply only.

How much is delivery?

We dispatch within 2 working days. Delivery then takes up to 7 working days by tracked courier. Delivery is free across Australia on orders of $99 or more, and $27.50 including GST below that. Remote and regional addresses may take longer.

What if I change my mind?

Change your mind? Return it unused in its original packaging within 14 days of delivery; you pay the return postage. If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, the Australian Consumer Law covers you and we pay the return postage. Our refunds and returns page has the full detail.

Getting real value out of a scare product

4 min read BuyFactory Direct

Understand the category first

There are two kinds of bird product: barriers and scare devices. A barrier removes a surface, so there is nothing to get used to. A scare device relies on the bird deciding something is a risk, and birds are good at working out that a risk which never materialises is not one.

These discs are a scare device. That is not a criticism, it is an instruction manual.

The three rules

Move them. Every couple of weeks is enough. A disc that has hung in the same spot for two months has become part of the tree.

Add rather than replace. When pressure rises, put more up at the point the birds come in rather than moving the same three around.

Use them seasonally. Take them down when the fruit is picked. Birds that spend the winter learning to ignore them will start next spring already used to them.

Siting

They need wind and daylight, so hang them on the outside of a tree rather than buried in it, high enough that the crop does not stop them turning. Vary the heights: a row all at one level reads as a line rather than as movement.

Watch where the reflection lands. Flashing light travels further than people expect and a row along a boundary can be a genuine nuisance to a neighbour.

What they do that spikes cannot

They cover a volume. A run of discs through a fruit tree is protecting the whole tree, not a line along the top of a fence. That is why they pair well with netting on a crop, where the net is the barrier and the discs discourage landing on it.

Where they will not compete

Any established roosting habit. Pigeons on a parapet, starlings in a gutter, mynas on a beam. Those are barrier problems, and a strip at twelve dollars will outperform any number of discs.

Maintenance

Wipe them when they dull. A dusty mirror reflects almost nothing, and reflecting is the entire job.
