Looking after it

Moulded plastic collects grime rather than corroding. A wipe down when you next clean the surface is all it wants, plus pulling out whatever has blown into it.

No AssemblyOne moulded piece, straight out of the packet
Lowest ProfileThe choice when it must not be seen
WeatherproofUnaffected by heat or cold
Non LethalA blunt discomfort, not a hazard

The low profile, lower cost strip.

One piece moulded plastic, sold by the 50 cm. The one to choose when the run is long, the budget matters or you want the spikes to disappear.

A single piece of injection moulded plastic, 500 mm long, ready to fit with no assembly at all.

It does the same job as the stainless strip on the surfaces most people are treating: ledges, sills, fence rails, shed roofs, railings and sign tops.

Where it wins is cost per metre and profile. Where the stainless strip wins is coastal exposure and anything a heavy animal will put weight on.

Fix it with screws, exterior double sided tape, adhesive or cable ties, and cut it with a hacksaw where the run does not divide neatly.

Measure the whole run, divide by 50 cm and round up. The bare end is where they will land.

Bird Deterrent Spikes| Pest Control Spikes | Spike Pest Control (per 50cm strip)

This is the strip to buy when you have a lot of metres to cover and no special conditions to work around. A long fence line, a run of shed guttering, a shop awning, the top of a boundary wall: places where the job is straightforward and the deciding factor is what it costs to do all of it rather than half of it.

Bird Deterrent Spikes| Pest Control Spikes | Spike Pest Control (per 50cm strip)

The choice between this and the stainless strip is mostly about site rather than quality. Moulded plastic is a single piece with nothing to assemble, it costs less per metre and it sits lower, which matters when the run is at eye level. Stainless is the one to pick for coastal exposure, for anything a heavy animal will lean on, and for anything that has to be specified.

Bird Deterrent Spikes| Pest Control Spikes | Spike Pest Control (per 50cm strip)

Fixing decides how long it stays put far more than the material does. On timber, screws. On a block capping or a painted surface, a UV stabilised exterior adhesive on a surface you have actually cleaned. Grit and old growth under an adhesive strip is why it lifts in a year.

None of these strips is a trap and none of them is sharp enough to injure. They work by making a surface unpleasant to stand on, which is also why placement beats quantity: a treated rail with an untreated post beside it is a step, not a barrier.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You cannot always judge a product from a photograph. If it is not right for you, send it back within 14 days of delivery in resaleable condition and we refund the price you paid, including standard delivery. That is on top of your Australian Consumer Law rights if anything arrives faulty.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Australian Consumer Law and the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 covers you, and we pay the return postage. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it made of?

Injection moulded plastic, in one piece.

Does it need assembling?

No. The stainless strips arrive with pins to fit into the base; this one does not.

How is it sold?

Per 50 cm strip with no minimum order.

How many strips per metre?

Two, and round up rather than leaving a bare end.

Is it as good as the stainless one?

For most surfaces, yes. Stainless is the better pick for coastal exposure and for anything heavy that will lean on it.

Why is it cheaper?

It is a single moulded piece rather than steel pins and a base, so it costs less to make.

Will it go brittle in the sun?

It is made for outdoor use and is not affected by ordinary temperature swings. Anything left in full sun for years eventually shows it.

Can I cut it?

Yes, with a hacksaw or a sturdy pair of snips.

Will it follow a curve?

In short lengths. Cut and step it around rather than forcing one piece.

What fixings should I use?

Screws in timber, adhesive or exterior double sided tape on masonry and painted surfaces, cable ties on railings and pipes.

Does the surface need preparing?

Yes if you are using tape or adhesive. Clean it, dry it and let it be dry before you fix.

Which birds does it work on?

The same as the stainless strip: medium and large birds that need a flat surface to land and turn on.

Will it stop sparrows?

Not reliably on a wide ledge. Small birds settle between spikes. Netting is the better answer there.

Will it stop cats?

On a fence rail, yes, and we sell the same strip as cat spikes for exactly that.

Will it stop possums?

It discourages them. For a heavy animal that will test it, screws rather than tape, and consider the stainless strip.

Does it hurt anything?

No. It is blunt and it is a discomfort rather than a hazard.

Is it visible?

Less than the stainless strip, because there are no pins catching the light. Black on a dark surface almost disappears.

Can I paint it?

You can, and on a coloured fence people often do. Use an exterior paint suited to plastic.

Can I use it on a shed roof edge?

Yes, and shed roofs are one of the common uses.

Can I use it on a sign?

Yes. Signage is a good use because droppings on a sign are what customers see.

What about a window sill?

Yes, and a low profile strip on a sill is much less obvious than steel pins.

Will it damage the surface?

Screws leave holes and adhesive leaves residue. Neither harms the strip; think about which you would rather deal with later.

Can I take it off later?

Screw fixed, easily. Adhesive will need cutting off and cleaning up.

Do I need two rows on a wide ledge?

Over about 150 mm, yes.

Does it need maintenance?

Pull the leaf litter out of it once a year.

Is it recyclable?

It is a single plastic moulding, so it depends entirely on what your local kerbside service accepts. We would not promise more than that.

Do you sell it in bulk?

Yes. Send the metres through the wholesale page.

Do you install it?

No, we supply only.

How much is delivery?

We dispatch within 2 working days. Delivery then takes up to 7 working days by tracked courier. Delivery is free across Australia on orders of $99 or more, and $27.50 including GST below that. Remote and regional addresses may take longer.

Can I return it if I ordered too many?

Change your mind? Return it unused in its original packaging within 14 days of delivery; you pay the return postage. If it arrives faulty, damaged or not as described, the Australian Consumer Law covers you and we pay the return postage. Our refunds and returns page has the full detail.

Moulded plastic or stainless: how to choose

4 min read BuyFactory Direct

They do the same job

Both strips work the same way: they remove the flat surface an animal needs to stand on. On an ordinary ledge, sill or fence rail, either will do the job and the choice is about the site rather than about quality.

Choose moulded plastic when

The run is long and the budget decides how much of it gets done. Covering all of a fifty metre boundary in plastic beats covering half of it in stainless, because half a job is a detour.

The strip is at eye level and you would rather not see it. There are no pins catching the light, and black on a dark fence is close to invisible from a few metres.

You want no assembly. This arrives as one moulded piece.

Choose stainless when

The site is coastal. Salt decides a lot of exterior choices in Australia and this is one of them.

Something heavy will lean on it. A possum putting its full weight on a strip is a different load case from a pigeon landing on one.

The job is being specified for a commercial client, where a material specification is part of the paperwork.

Fixing is the same decision either way

Screws in timber. Exterior adhesive or double sided tape on masonry, painted metal and plastic. Cable ties on railings and pipework. The surface has to be clean and dry before adhesive touches it, and that step, rather than the strip, is what decides whether it is still there in five years.

Quantity

Each strip is 500 millimetres. Measure the run, double it, round up, and do not stop short of the end.

One thing plastic does better

You can paint it. On a coloured fence or a heritage frontage where the client wants the deterrent invisible, a strip painted to match is genuinely unobtrusive in a way steel pins are not.
